You Got the Promotion But No Raise
You Got the Promotion But No RaiseYou Got the Promotion But No RaiseThe pace of change in technology is incredible. With things moving so quickly, especially at start-ups, tech pros are sometimes given additional responsibilities (a promotion to lead web developer from web developer, for example), but with no increase in compensation.Sometimes these are battlefield promotions that require someone to step up and fill a void to meet a critical business need. Other times a promotion without a raise can be a sort of test to prove you can handle additional responsibilities basically, youre expected to do the job before you get the job. What should IT professionals do when this happens, and when should they ask for a raise?More responsibilities should = mora moneyIm always supportive of taking on more responsibilities if theyre offered. Being asked is a vote of confidence in you, and presents you with the opportunity to increase your value and impact in the organization. However, I also s trongly believe that increased responsibilities should translate to increased compensation and/or additional perks. If not, receiving increased responsibilities or a bigger title can feel less like an opportunity and more like a company taking advantage of you.Open a dialogueIf you are an IT professional in this situation, its reasonable to expect to discuss this openly with your manager before accepting any new responsibilities. Start by simply asking what additional compensation or company perks will accompany these added work responsibilities. Your manager may not be able to provide any financial increase immediately, but she may agree to an increase on a specific date based on certain criteria being met. (Make sure you get an agreement in writing with both the criteria you must meet and the date of the potential raise in a case like this.)Employers should understand the current (hot) marketFor employers on the other side of this equation, its important to remember that the marke t is very competitive and many technology professionals are experiencing compensation increases for doing the saatkorn job. So offering a team member a promotion without a raise could create a negative perception and may even cause an IT pro to seek another job. This post has been updated to reflect more current information.

Sensors Are Making Cycling Safer
Sensors Are Making Cycling Safer Sensors Are Making Cycling Safer Sensors Are Making Cycling SaferLook out on numerous roads and youll see them trying to find a way into a crowded lane, picking their way through traffic. Bicyclists are seemingly everywhere. Helmet strapped and riding a two-wheeled vehicle that can sometimes be more expensive than the cars that pass them, they go it alone or sometimes ride in packs. As cycling becomes a more and more popular mode of green transportation in cities such from Portland to San Francisco, its safe to say that comparatively vulnerable cyclists can use all the help they can get as they seek to share the roads with SUVs and 18-wheelers. A team currently working at the University of Minnesota hopes to create a much-needed warning system to protect bicycles from motor vehicles, providing a respectful and safe transportation environment.Rajesh Ramani, a professor of mechanical engineering at the school, says just as some cars have collision-preven tion systems, there isnt a reason why there cant be a corresponding one for bikes.A bicycle equipped with the prototype collision-warning system. Image University of MinnesotaIf this could be a system which could track nearby cars on the road, for people who need bikes for everything from exercise to getting to work, then it could be an important success, he says of the project, which received funding from the National Science Foundation. Yes, theres a system for cars for automatic warning and braking. Bicycles dont need to tell, really, if they will run into a car. But its different when you talk about the danger of being hit from the rear or from the side while going through a traffic intersection. Thats the mindset you have to take going into creating something like this. Its a different need than for cars. Its different collision scenarios. The system has been worked on for over two years now and it revolves around developing a reliable sensor system for the bicycle. The system m ixes in algorithms as well, along with a microprocessor providing an alert.During their work, cost became a major factor. For the rear collision system, for example, we had to balance cost versus having sufficient range, he says. A sonar sensor for the rear worked out financially because its less than twenty dollars but its physical range is only on the order of six meters or so. We need at least twenty meters. Radar sensors give much longer range but are much more expensive. We ended up going with a laser sensor thats mounted on a stepper motorthe sensor itself costs eighty nine dollars at retail. With the sensor, he explains, it allowed them to monitor vehicles that are behind the bicycle. They could also do active sensing. That means doing active locational control of the laser sensor, he offers. As the car behind the bicycle moves laterally or longitudinally, the sensor stays focused on it.The system also has a special type of sonar system, a triad unit one transmitter and two rec eivers. Were using this is to be able to find both the distance and orientation of the car at the side of the bicycle, he says. The warning system is being further developed to start with visual signals from the bicycle and also to provide loud audio. The audio is just like when you can hear a car honk from another car when youre driving but this would have a different sound so a driver would know its specifically a bicycle.Despite their strides, there are still challenges left when it comes to reliably tracking the vehicles at this point, he admits. I think were doing well for rear and side and working on the front, he says. The goal is to keep the price at five hundred dollars or less and keep it lightweight and low power. I like where were headed.Eric Butterman is an independent writer. For Further Discussion Thats the mindset you have to take going into creating something like this. Its a different need than for cars. Its different collision scenarios. Prof. Rajesh Ramani, Univer sity of Minnesota

LGBTQ employees on what matters to them in the workplace
LGBTQ employees on what matters to them in the workplaceLGBTQ employees on what matters to them in the workplaceAs Pride Month rounds out, it is important to remember that celebrating diversity and inclusion isnt only welcomed from June 1 to June 30 but year round. Especially if you aspire to attract a diverse workforce, instituting policies and practices that make dynamic communities feel welcome, appreciated and valued is key.The tricky part, of curse, is making aya your efforts hit the mark - without making those who identify as LGBTQ feel uncomfortable or spotlighted ineffectively. Not sure how to start the brainstorming session or the shift in mindset or routine? Here, gay employees provide their insight on what really matters to them in the workplaceHost pride month celebrationsDid you check this one off this year? Awesome. If not - get planning now to ensure youre outwardly and internally pausing to celebrate Pride month. Senior account executive at Finn Partners, Zander Wh arton explains as a community, many struggle with feeling different, and the month of June serves as a time to unite, bonding over those differences in a meaningful way. When a business is forthright with their support, Wharton says employees will feel more comfortable and empowered to be themselves. Its important to me to work for a company that not only recognizes the month of June as Pride Month but also one that helps to celebrate its LGBT employees during this time, he notes. As an example, Finn Partners June newsletter included a note from the CEO, illustrating his - and the corporations proactive commitment to inclusion.Commit to diversity in hiringWhile by law, it is vital to hire the right rolle for the gig, dependent on their laundry list of characteristics - from race to age and beyond. Even so, diversifying employees while hiring will make for a much more creative, inclusive workspace. As founder and chief creative officer Tim Haughinberry at Back Bar USA explains, they purposefully include all sexual identities, religions, races, ages, and attitudes. This allows us to excel at what we do, as our clients are as diverse as our employees. Our diversity also allows us to associate, integrate and adapt to many types of partalities, which gives our company an extra edge, he shares.Allow those to come as they areThis might seem like a no-brainer, but too many employers have dress codes or unspoken eyebrow raises that can make it difficult to fully present their authentic self to clients, co-workers and beyond. If I cant be myself in the workplace - sharing who I am, what I do on weekends, or who my partner is - then its not an environment I want or need to be in, director of Lucky Break PR in San Francisco, Phillip Sontag says. Its really important for me to be myself and that includes being a part of the LGBTQ+ community.Have empathy and be understandingEven if, as a manager, you also identify as LGBT- no person can ever fully understand the background or current state of a persons mindset, hardships or needs. This is why lead barber at Best Barber Greg Cooper Spencer says empathy should be at the core of all companies. Especially those who aim to be inclusive. So often many voices go unrecognized because they dont fit into the idea that weve been groomed to expect to see in certain situations, I face this problem still to this day even with a celebrity clientele, he shares. For this reason, I have a great deal of empathy for those individuals in pursuit of dreams that are silenced without being given an opportunity to be acknowledged at the very least.Provide benefits for significant othersEven those senior advisor for AppleCare, Kyle Ankney is single, he has one non-negotiable for any company he chooses to accept an offer from Benefits for significant others. In addition to any social events or discussions that could set the tone for a company, outwardly backing an employees personal life speaks volumes. The ability to share bene fits with your significant other Being able to share healthcare the ability leave company-provided life insurance to that person, and a 401K is a must, he notes.Bring groups togetherWhether it is through happy hours, team-building exercises or other events, Wharton stresses the importance of bringing minority employee communities together within the workplace. The LGBTQ community often feels is that of being alone. Were in constant search of feeling included and we find this often times in our chosen family those that may not be blood-related to us but that are emotionally close enough to play a significant role in our lives, he explains. When you provide easy opportunities for like-minded employees to connect, they will feel supported and able to express themselves, while building both personal and professional relationships.Commit to fighting LGBT rightsThis can go as far as you are comfortable, but Ankney says to set themselves apart, a company must truly embrace the LGBT community by actively taking a stance on furthering their rights. The reality is, the fight for equality is ongoing, and working for a company that is willing to make a statement and take a stance on LGBT issues when appropriate, creates a work-environment that accepts and embraces diversity, and sparks a deeper sense of pride and loyalty from me as an individual, he shares.

ASME Briefing on Capitol Hill Highlights Cutting-Edge Lasers
ASME Briefing on Capitol Hill Highlights Cutting-Edge Lasers ASME Briefing on Capitol Hill Highlights Cutting-Edge Lasers ASME Briefing on Capitol Hill Highlights Cutting-Edge LasersJan. 12, 2018 Wim Leemans (far right) of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, addresses the audience at the ASME Congressional Briefing, Lasers for America Driving Advancements in Science, National Security, Manufacturing, Health, and U.S. Competitiveness, on Dec 12. The other panelists taking part in the discussion were (left to right) Jim Kafka from Spectra-Physics, James Clayton of Varian Medical Systems, E. Michael Campbell of the University of Rochester, and moderator Gregory Quarles of the Optical Society. ASME recently convened a congressional staff briefing titled, Lasers for America Driving Advancements in Science, National Security, Manufacturing, Health, and U.S. Competitiveness. The briefing, which welches held Dec. 12, followed the release of a National Academies of Sciences (NAS) study, t itled Opportunities in Intense Ultrafast Lasers Reaching for the Brightest Light. The NAS study, which was conducted at the request of the Department of Energy, the Office of Naval Research and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, evaluates the current state of high-intensity, ultrafast lasers and laser technologies, and assesses the value of future high-intensity laser science programs and facilities in the United States and around the world.U.S. investments in science and technology led to the development of the laser in 1960. Since then, the laser has become a ubiquitous tool across a broad range of applications. The laser is now used to perform cutting edge experiments at advanced particle accelerators, to aid in the development of advanced materials for national security applications, and to enable novel treatments to treat cancer and other medical conditions. Today, the worldwide laser market is valued at roughly $10.5 billion and growing annually. (Left to right) ASME Congressional Briefing panelists Wim Leemans, Jim Kafka, James Clayton and E. Michael Campbell, moderator Gregory Quarles, and Rep. Bill Foster (D-IL), who delivered opening remarks at the event. Another major breakthrough in laser technologies, again led by researchers in the United States, is the short-pulse, high-peak power laser. This new class of laser could have transformative applications with far reaching impact, including the development of small, compact particle accelerators that are a fraction of the length of contemporary accelerator systems, or powerful new specialized medical treatment and scanning capabilities.Despite the United States early lead in this technology, the country is at risk of losing its competitive advantage. According to the NAS study, countries in Europe and Asia are investing heavily in this foundational technology and plan to overtake the U.S. At the same time, U.S. federal investment in the research and development of high-peak power lasers has been declining significantly, leaving American researchers and companies vulnerable to international competition.ASME partnered with internationally recognized scientists and representatives from American industry for the Dec. 12 briefing to provide insights to policymakers on the current state of laser science and technology development. Panelists discussed the key role that lasers play in U.S. innovation and economic competitiveness, and how the nation can maintain preeminence in laser technology. (Left to right) James Clayton, Wim Leemans, Jim Kafka, Rep. Louise Slaughter (foreground), E. Michael Campbell, Gregory Quarles and Connie Lausten. Lausten is the chair of the ASME Energy Public Policy Task Force. The briefing opened with comments from Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (D-NY), who spoke about the economic impact that laser science has had on the Rochester, New York region, and Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL), who is currently the only physicist in Congress and a passionate champion for physical sciences funding in Congress. Connie Lausten, chair of the ASME Energy Public Policy Task Force, and moderator Dr. Gregory Quarles, chief scientist at the Optical Society, guided discussion among the panelists, who offered laser technology expertise from across industry and academia. Taking part in the panel were E. Michael Campbell, director of the Laboratory for Laser Energetics at the University of Rochester James Clayton, senior scientist at Varian Medical Systems Jim Kafka, chief technology officer for Spectra-Physics, a teilen of MKS and Wim Leemans, director of the Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. To read more about ASMEs Congressional Briefings, please visit https//www.asme.org/about-asme/get-involved/advocacy-government-relations and to download the report, please visit https//www.nap.edu/catalog/24939/opportunities-in-intense-ultrafast-lasers-reaching-for-the-brightest-light. How to Tell Your Employer You Are Entering Rehab
How to Tell Your Employer You Are Entering Rehab In one memorable episode ofThe Office, Steve Carrells character Michael Scott organizes a workplace intervention for his alcoholic employee Meredith and his so-called surprise party for people with addictions is a total disaster.Michael Scott may be a mid-level manager at a fictional paper company, but his actions do reflect a reality in the workplace Nearly 1 in 10 full-time workers in the United States has recently had a substance abuse problem, according to 2015 findings by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The lingering stigma surrounding drug and alcohol addiction can impede many addicts from seeking effective treatment. Its difficult to tell your employer that you need to leave work for weeks or months to enter rehab. If you are struggling to get the conversation started, try some of these tipsKnow Your RightsThanks to the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) of 1993, e mployees dont have to choose between going to treatment and keeping their jobs. The FMLA allowspeople to take a job-protected leave of up to 12 weeks for family and medical reasons, one of which can be drug or alcohol rehab. (Learn more about whether you are FMLA-eligible.)Do Your Homework Before Talking to Your baboGive plenty of consideration to the circumstances of your employment- How long have you been employed here, and what is your status of employment (full- or part-time, exempt or nonexempt, etc.)?- What does your employee handbook say regarding leave of absence policies?- Do you have a sense of mutual trust and rapport with your higher-ups?Such considerations should factor into any decision about how much information to volunteer. In some cases, sharing more information than is necessary can introduce additional anxiety about an interaction that is already anxiety-producing. Or, that information may come back to haunt you later on when youre back on the job and successfull y in recovery. You should also research and confirm the following factors ahead of time so that the conversation goes as smoothly as possible- The exact dates of your time away from work- Your availability to work during treatment, if any- How you are preparing for your absence so that it causes the least amount of disruption to workflow or strain on your supervisor and colleaguesThink about what youll say to your boss before sitting down with them. You may also benefit from consulting with an addiction professional before the meeting. Some rehab programs have counselors on staff who can help you prepare for these sorts of conversations.Decide Whether to Reveal to Your Boss That Youre Going to RehabAs an employee with a health problem, you are entitled to the same degree of privacy as any other employee. You are not legally required to tell your employer the specifics of your condition. In fact, many people entering rehab choose not to divulge this factto their employer. You can alway s request an unpaid leave of absence for personal medical or non-medical reasons no further explanation needed. Alternatively, if youve accumulated enough vacation or sick days to cover your time in rehab, you can simply request the time off without needing to ask for medical leave.Be Clear About Your Motivations and Treatment DetailsIf you choose to divulge that youre going to rehab for drugs or alcohol, consider mentioning the following- Your apprehension about the conversation and why you feel that way, whether its the stigma of the disease, the fear that your boss may lose confidence in your abilities, etc.- Your desire to be honest about your medical decision, given that your boss may have concerns about your request or may need a doctors note or other information as verification- How treatment will improve your job performance and reduce absenteeism- A drug-free workplace policy (if there is one) that you take seriously- The provisions of the FMLA, if applicable- A request fo r confidentiality about your decision to enter rehab- Your enthusiasm about returning to work after rehabAvoid going into any detail about the history of your addiction or your uncertainties about the treatment process and whether treatment will help. Try to answer any questions honestly but also as succinctly as possible. Most importantly, keep the tone positive. Remember that your boss has enough to manage. Too many personal details may send the katechese that they now have another problem on their hands, which is the last thing either of you need a reminder that comes by way of Michael Scott.Anna Ciulla is the vice president of clinical and medical services atBeach House Center for Recovery.
